Dental Services Covered Under the Medical Care Plan (MCP) in Newfoundland and Labrador

The Medical Care Plan (MCP) in Newfoundland and Labrador provides coverage for a variety of healthcare services, including some dental services. However, it’s important to note that not all dental services are covered, and coverage may be limited depending on your specific situation.

The Children’s Dental Health Program provides universal access for eligible dental services for children 12 years and under as well as for children 13 to 17 years whose families receive Income Support benefits.

Here are some dental services that may be covered under the MCP in Newfoundland:

Children’s Dental Health Program

The Children’s Dental Health Program covers dental exams every six months, cleanings every 12 months, fluoride treatments for kids aged six to twelve at 12-month intervals, routine fillings and extractions, and sealants. Parents should ask their dentist if the program covers recommended treatments.

Income Support Program

The Income Support Program provides “Basic Services” for dental care to youths aged 13 to 17 years whose family receives Income Support benefits. This includes dental exams every two years, routine fillings, and extractions. However, it doesn’t cover cleaning, fluoride treatment, or extraction of impacted teeth.

Low Income (Access) Program

The Low Income (Access) Program provides the same services as the Income Support Program. Eligible youth must be enrolled in the Access Plan of the Newfoundland and Labrador Prescription Drug Program (NLPDP).

Please note that an application needs to be submitted for a child to be covered under the Low-Income Access Program. These forms can be found at www.health.gov.nl.ca. Parents will be given an eligibility letter to confirm coverage. Please bring this letter with you to our clinic to ensure your child is covered.

For information or to request an application for the Access Plan you may call: 1-888-859-3535

Adult Dental Program

The Adult Dental Program covers an exam and x-rays once every 3 years and routine fillings once every year up to a yearly maximum of $300. The program also covers the cost of standard dentures but not specialized dentures.

Preventative services (cleaning and/or fluoride) are not covered under the program. Extractions are covered and not considered part of the $300 cap, but impacted teeth are not covered)
